Rigorous Analysis of Trapped Modes in Accelerating Cavities

چکیده
We report the development of different algorithms for the calculation of quality factors of eigenmodes in accelerating cavities, which have resonance frequencies above the cutoff frequency of the beam tubes. The analysis is based on a discretization of such cavity structures by the Finite Integration Technique (FIT), and the radiation at the open boundaries is systematically taken into account by different approaches in time and frequency domain. Results indicate that even single cell cavities of the TESLA type show Q-values of 10 and multicell cavities values in excess of 10. Thus these modes may cause considerable beam instabilities. Comparison with the conventional method of analyzing closed cavities and identifying modes with little change in frequency as function of boundary condition show qualitative differences. Some modes from the closed cavity model do not exist in the open structure and thus would be misinterpreted as trapped modes when only a closed cavity analysis is employed.

Trapped Modes in Tesla Cavities
In the TESLA linear collider scheme [1] the existence of trapped modes [2] within a TESLA cavity could be a severe problem to be overcome. Damping of trapped modes seems impossible due to their localization within the cavity, which prevents a coupling to the HOM dampers mounted to both ends of the beam pipes. As a consequence the energy of a trapped mode can achieve considerable values after se...
متن کاملMeasurement with Beam of the Deflecting Higher Order Modes in the Ttf Superconducting Cavities
This paper reports on recent beam measurements of higher order modes in the TESLA Test Facility (TTF) accelerating modules. Using bunch trains of about 0.5 ms with 54 MHz bunch repetition and up to 90 % modulated intensity, transverse higher order modes are resonantly excited when the beam is offset and their frequency on resonance with the modulation frequency. With this method, the trapped mo...
متن کاملAutomated Mode Recognition Algorithm for Accelerating Cavities
Eigenmode simulations of accelerating structures often involve a large number of computed modes that need to be cataloged and compared. In order to effectively process all the information gathered from eigenmode simulations a new algorithm was developed to automatically recognize modes’ field patterns. In this paper we present the principles of the algorithm and investigate its applicability by...
متن کاملHigher Order Modes for Beam Diagnostics in Third Harmonic 3.9 Ghz Accelerating Modules
An international team is currently investigating the best way to use Higher Order Modes (HOM) for beam diagnostics in 3.9 GHz cavities. HOMs are excited by charged particles when passing through an accelerating structure. Third harmonic cavities working at 3.9 GHz have been installed in FLASH to linearize the bunch energy profile. A proof-of-principle of using HOMs for beam monitoring has been ...
متن کاملIMPACT OF TRAPPED MAGNETIC FLUX AND THERMAL GRADIENTS ON THE PERFORMANCE OF Nb3Sn CAVITIES∗
Trapped magnetic flux is known to degrade the quality factor of superconducting cavities by increasing the surface losses ascribed to the residual resistance. In Nb3Sn cavities, which consist of a thin layer of Nb3Sn coated on a bulk niobium substrate, the bimetallic interface results in a thermal current being generated in the presence of a thermal gradient, which will in turn generate flux th...
